Join Us in 2018!

March 13-15, 2018 – Clayton, NC

The North Carolina economy has shifted and changed over the past three decades, leaving many communities struggling to regain their footing in the current market. Yet many communities are realizing that economic success can be found by embracing their authentic assets. Community assets come in many forms, such as cultural, institutional, governmental, community and human, natural and recreational, and economic assets. These assets define strategic economic development directions that help communities focus and prioritize the projects that are important. When those projects are exceptional, they provide the perfect pitch that attracts consumers, entrepreneurs and developers to their communities.

The Main Street America™ Four-Point Approach® serves as the accompaniment to asset based economic development strategies. Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Vitality projects are the melody that brings the strategy to life. Art partnerships and cultural amenities, trails that connect people to our downtowns, high quality curb appeal, local foods and spirits and much more, are spurring renewed interest in downtown and its buildings and businesses.

The North Carolina Main Street conference is the state’s largest downtown revitalization event, offering learning sessions, tours, time for downtown exploration and opportunities for networking with downtown professionals, elected officials, volunteers and consultants. Attendees will learn how to identify strategies and how to create an ensemble of projects that support and facilitate economic development in their communities.

The 2018 N.C. Main Street Conference will take you to a town that’s more than doubled in population since 2000 – Clayton, N.C. Just 20 minutes from Raleigh, it’s home to some of the world’s largest companies, like Grifols, Novo Nordisk, Caterpillar and Bayer – and it’s the fastest-growing town in Johnston County, which was just listed in North Carolina’s Top 5 booming housing markets. That amazing growth and investment is most evident at Clayton’s heart – it’s downtown, where the Town and businesses have successfully partnered to preserve the small-town charm with more than $20 million invested in revitalization projects in the last decade – from a booming brewery in an old cotton mill, modern offices in a 1920’s Ford dealership…to jazz-infused cocktail lounges and rooftop dining restaurants in previously-abandoned Main Street storefronts. Clayton also gets it when it comes to arts and culture, supporting inclusive and collaborate projects like the annually-rotating sculpture trail and public greenway system. The conference will be headquartered in two beautifully restored downtown schoolhouses, The Clayton Center, which serve as a performing arts venue and Town Hall. Clayton is buzzing with progressive new projects and a thriving arts and small business community – the perfect place for sponsors to make connections and share great ideas during the N.C. Main Street Conference.

A Few Facts About the Conference and Awards Program:

  • Our primary audience is downtown professionals, municipal elected officials, and their staff, property and business owners, downtown revitalization volunteers and other professionals interested in downtown development.
  • The conference this year will feature two dynamic keynote speakers and a full slate of educational sessions during the event. Tours of Downtown Clayton will offer ideas of best practices that can be applied in any community.
  • The conference is our major educational event and is the only downtown revitalization conference held in our state. It attracts approximately 500 attendees annually.
  • Typically, more than 130 communities from across the state and of all sizes are represented. Often we have registrants from neighboring states.
  • Many of our attendees are on restricted budgets and this is the one event that they plan on attending because of its educational and networking value. Our partners help us to produce a high-quality event at a reasonable cost for our attendees.
